Our Story

Medically underserved communities such as forcibly displaced and rural populations in East Africa lack access to healthcare services. Individuals with medical conditions travel 2 hours to 3 days on foot, motorbikes or canoes to reach distant health centers; putting expectant mothers, under-5 children, the elderly and those with physical impairments most at risk. Bottlenecks to improving equitable access to affordable, high-quality healthcare include the severe shortage of qualified healthcare workers, uneven regional distribution and lack of capacity.

The Upper Nile Institute (UNI) enables equitable access to affordable, high-quality healthcare for all through sustainable last mile health solutions and health workers’ capacity strengthening. We commit to the Universal Health Coverage of “moving together to build a healthier world.”
